Looking up at the sky on some melancholy nights, I sometimes can’t help but wonder why the moon is half today and full another night. Do you, too? It isn’t your eye deceiving you; it’s the real deal. The full moon occurs when the whole moon passes through the earth’s shadow, and the lunar eclipse occurs. When this happens, the entire moon is visible to the whole world because the moon is opposite the Earth, away from the sun.
Different kinds of full moons are available for different months, each with uniqueness, symbolism, and magical connections. Most pagans love to celebrate the full moon with a monthly ritual, while some celebrate it in seasons.
Why is the full moon so important?
The Wicca and pagans have specifications for some magical workings according to the moon phases, so the appearance of a specific phase brings opportunities for rituals. The full moon is considered an appropriate time for evoking, overcoming obstacles, charging jewelry, casting spells, consecrating an instrument, banishing, getting married, making wishes, and so on. The full moon is an acclaimed time for the manifestation of desires, sexuality, abundance, prosperity, and also protection because it is the phase where the moon goddess is in her mother stage. Hence, the moon’s energy, at this time, is at its peak.
It is also said that moon deities can only be summoned during the full moon, so it might be a great time to call on a lunar deity for assistance. Another significant event of this period was the ‘drawing down the moon ritual’. During this ritual, a high priest invokes the moon goddess to communicate directly with the circle. This can be achieved in two ways: either the high priestess becomes possessed by goodness while she speaks, or the goddess appears in different forms to the people and communicates with them. Amazing, isn’t it?
